Description

Fort King George is the best-preserved colonial fort in Tobago. Recently refurbished, it offers expansive views over Scarborough and the Atlantic side of the island.

The tour begins with a city visit to Scarborough, followed by a walk through the Botanical Garden. The garden features broad lawns, shaded trees, and colorful flora such as African tulips, flamboyant trees, and massive silk-cotton trees.

Next, drive across the island to the Caribbean coast and visit the 17th-century ruins of Fort James, overlooking Courland Bay. Here you can see the “Mysterious Tombstone,” which bears an unusual inscription that intrigues visitors and locals alike. The tombstone’s memorial mentions Betty Stivens, who died in 1723, with an enigmatic message that remains unexplained.

The tour continues to a 12-acre Tropical Garden nature reserve and working organic estate. This area supports sustainable agriculture and is home to over 50 bird species, including many hummingbirds, as well as butterflies, iguanas, and fruit orchards. A walk through the garden provides a relaxing end to the visit.

The return drive follows a coastal route along the Caribbean coast, providing additional views of the island.
