Acajou
Trinidadandtobago
A stunning ecolodge in tranquil Grande Riviere, Acajou really is perfect for those wanting a slice of paradise.
Set against a backdrop of jungle clad hills, with a beachfront location, the Acajou is set in a picture postcard location. The emphasis here is on nature, and it shows. The hotel is small, consisting of five cottages only, and every effort is made to have as little impact on the environment as possible: no pesticides or insecticides are used and all water is preserved.
Each cottage has a private sun deck with a view of the beach and local river; perfect for sipping an ice cool drink on! Privacy is the paramount emphasis here, so it's perfect for those just wanting to get away from it all.
The onsite restaurant is a must, and the menu beautifully blends local Trinidadian and Swedish cuisine (reflecting the owners' nationalities). Moreover, all produce is sourced locally.
Grande Riviere is renowned as one of the primary nesting sites for the leatherback turtle, so from the months of March to September you're guaranteed a sighting of this beautiful (yet sadly endangered) creature. If you like hiking then you're in luck, as this corner of Trinidad offers excellent hiking trails through the jungle clad hills to hidden waterfalls. Surfing is also available here.
